Learn Every Day!
At the beginning of this month, I was invited to a Conference in Anaheim, CA to speak with college students seeking to develop a career in Finance. As an ALPFA member, I was more than happy to give a speech on “How to attain a high paying career at some of the most distinguished companies in the world”. After delivering my message focused on a few key principles and a short Q&A session, some of these young professional had the courage to speak to me. I was there to teach but I learned a great deal from these young students. I learned 3 important lessons:
The speech is just the beginning. I thought that giving a good & entertaining speech would influence many to take action but consistently reiterating the message is key. Some of the students that followed up with me and asked for one-on-one call gave me an additional opportunity to dive deep in the message and provide additional context. During these coaching sessions, I directed them to resources on my website or other places. Having the ability to have another touch-point and having a quick conversation helps in cementing the message. The speech happens really quickly and it’s a one time event; It’s an effective tool but not the only one available.
Networking after the event continues to be crucial. I was not only impressed but inspired by how many students presented themselves professionally and acted quickly. Many of us aspire for more in our lives but don’t really do what’s necessary. Reaching out to people after the event is not only extra work but what if they don’t get back to you? Many students were not afraid to reach out and connect. The more I talk to individuals, the more stories I hear about how their personal network has opened opportunities that would otherwise not been possible.
It’s still up to the individual to make the choice. Although each individual heard the same speech and had a good time at the event, it’s really up to them to apply to concepts learned at the conference. During these events we will have similar opportunities but some of us decide not to take action and others actually start working on important goals. Motivational stories are a great way to connect and reduce the false beliefs that prevents our success but it's really is up to the individual to make that determination and take the next step.
